You probably thought Alex Semin had a surefire goal here, but Calvin Pickard makes an absurd desperation save to stop the shot.
The Colorado Avalanche called up goaltender Calvin Pickard four days ago to be the backup to Reto Berra with incumbent starter Semyon Varlamov sidelined. On Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes, Pickard got the nod for his third career NHL start and made a save that’ll deserve to be in the season-ending highlight reel:
Carolina winger Alex Semin appears to have a surefire goal on the rebound once his original shot caroms off the iron, with seemingly nothing left between him and a goal. However, Pickard somehow managed to maneuver and locate the puck, then swat it with his stick into his grasp at the absolute last instant.
Here’s another angle of the unbelievable save:
Pickard is primarily the starter for Lake Erie in the AHL when everyone is healthy, but this is probably as impressive a save as any Colorado goaltender will make this season. Semin, meanwhile, remains without a goal on the year and seems to be running into some terrible luck as he tries to change that.
