Jessie Vargas earns a decision victory in the first fight of the Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri pay-per-view.
Jessie Vargas and Antonio DeMarco opened up the main card broadcast for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri pay-per-view with a very entertaining fight. Vargas, now under the training of boxing legend Roy Jones Jr, looked very confident in his power punching, really sitting down on his big shots and slowing DeMarco’s aggression during the early and middle rounds.
DeMarco isn’t a particularly dynamic fighter, so he didn’t back down for long, eventually returning with his own power shots. It felt that the fight was likely getting away from him, however, as the rounds seemed to continue to pile up for Vargas.
Throughout the fight it was clear that Vargas was figuring out how to best use the tools at his disposal, shifting from single punches to putting his big shots together into combinations that were rocking DeMarco.
In the end the better fighter was able to pick up the win as Vargas took a unanimous decision winning 116-112 across all three official judge’s scorecards.
With the win, Vargas improves to 26-0 for his career and more improvements to his game could make him a legitimate threat.
